A failing bluestone entry rebuilt with a proper base, drainage and frost-resistant mortar \u2014 level steps that will not heave next winter.
Project Overview
Shifting bluestone steps and a crumbling brick landing were rebuilt on a compacted base with correct drainage and a mortar matched to the exposure.
The original entry had settled unevenly over two winters, the brick landing was spalling, and the previous repair had coated the joints with a sealer instead of replacing the failed mortar \u2014 which simply trapped water inside the joint and accelerated the damage.
We removed the failed work down to sound material, rebuilt and compacted the base, and installed drainage so water leaves the entry rather than sitting in it. New bluestone was selected to tone-match the original.
Mortar was chosen for freeze-thaw performance rather than appearance alone. The completed entry is level, drains correctly and is detailed to resist the same freeze-thaw cycle that destroyed the previous version.
